Hotel Review: Novotel, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England - March 2015

http://ift.tt/1GW5dMK I stayed one night at the Novotel, Sheffield in March, 2015. It was a Saturday night, I booked a double room for two people with Booking.com for £79.00 (room only). The advertised breakfast price on Booking.com was £13.95, which we were not prepared to pay, however, upon check-in breakfast was offered at £9.95 - if booked before midnight. We decided to go with that option. If you are using Booking.com to book a room here, go for the room only option, and pay for breakfast upon arrival. The hotel is very well situated in Sheffield city centre, a 5-7 minute uphill walk from Sheffield railway station. You can enter from the Station side via the lower ground floor, or from the Winter Gardens side on the upper ground floor. If entering on the lower ground floor there are both stairs and a lift for getting upstairs. Note on the lower ground floor there is also a fitness suite and swimming pool - it is a very small pool, and the changing rooms are tiny, so it's probably better to get changed in your room. You need to get a keycard from reception to unlock the doors to the fitness area and swimming pool. Reception is large, colourful and bright, and the reception staff were all friendly and helpful. We were told upon check-in that an event was taking place and that there may be 'some noise' until midnight. They weren't wrong, it was boom boom boom until just after midnight. We didn't let it bother us, but I can imagine it would be an annoyance to many people. I asked for a room with a view on a high floor, however my view was of student flats next door, not a nice view at all, and I was really disappointed by this. I specifically requested a good view on Booking.com (hoping for a view over the valley), but I didn't bother complaining this time, as we were heading straight out after check-in. The room was the usual high standard that Novotel offer, no complaints really, other than the ironing board and iron taking up 50% of the wardrobe, and their being no small hand washing sink in the toilet room (I find this unhygienic). Crossing Hohenzollern Bridge, Cologne, North Rhine Westphalia, Germany - 26th February, 2015

http://ift.tt/1GW5dfT The Hohenzollern Bridge (German: Hohenzollernbrücke) is a bridge crossing the river Rhine in the German city of Cologne (German Köln). It crosses the Rhine at kilometre 688.5. Originally, the bridge was both a railway and street bridge, however, after its destruction in 1945 and its subsequent reconstruction, it was only accessible to rail and pedestrian traffic. It is the most heavily used railway bridge in Germany, connecting the Köln Hauptbahnhof and Köln Messe/Deutz stations. This film features views from an ICE Train as it leaves Cologne Hauptbahnhof, and crosses the Hohenzollern Bridge, heading towards Cologne Messe Deutz. Leaving Liège-Guillemins Railway Station, Wallonia, Belgium - 26th February, 2015

http://ift.tt/1GSI9P7 Liège-Guillemins railway station is the main station of the city of Liège, the third largest city in Belgium. It is one of the most important hubs in the country and is one of three Belgian stations on the high-speed rail network. The station is used by 15,000 people every day which makes it the eleventh busiest station in Belgium and the third in Wallonia. This film features views from a Deutsche Bahn ICE-3 class ICE Train as it leaves Liège-Guillemins Railway Station, travels through the Liège suburbs and along the high speed railway line towards Aachen. Review: Hotel Husa de la Couronne, Liège, Belgium - March 2015

http://ift.tt/1Eni5Jm I was working in Liège, Belgium in March, 2015 and needed accommodation close to the main railway station - Liège-Guillemins, the Hotel Husa de la Couronne fit the bill perfectly. It is located straight over the road from the station, literally a 30 second walk. I stayed for two nights at the hotel for 79 Euro per night, bed and breakfast. The room was comfortable, the bed was very soft with a luxurious foam mattress, I slept comfortably. The breakfast consisted of mostly continental options, with some freshly cooked hot options also. It was tasty, especially the potato, cheese and onion flan. The hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed my stay at this hotel and would absolutely stay here again. Snow Storm at Cookridge, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England - 29th January, 2015

http://ift.tt/1Lkr1bs On the 29th January, 2015, Northern England was hit by rolling severe snow storms. On the afternoon of this day these hit Cookridge, North West Leeds with quite dramatic results. The storm only lasted 30 minutes, but during this time visibility was low and Leeds Bradford Airport was closed to incoming aircraft. After the storm had passed, the sun came out and the sky was blue with white fluffy clouds, illuminating the white and bright landscape. Review: Avalon Hotel, Riga, Latvia - January, 2015

http://ift.tt/1BpZr4v I recently stayed at the Avalon Hotel, whilst on a short break to Riga. The hotel is within a 5 minute walk of Riga Central Station, and is only a street away from Riga Old Town. A taxi to the hotel from the airport cost 15 Euro. I paid 208 Euro with booking.com for a superior room with queen size bed, which looked over the railway line at the front of the hotel. The room was warm, quiet and very inviting. The bed was soft and comfortable. The bathroom was modern and shiny with a shower over the bath, and complimentary shower gel and shampoo provided daily. With my superior room I also received a voucher for a complimentary two course evening meal in the hotel restaurant. This was a good bonus, although I only ate there once, and wasn't particularly enamoured with the food. The breakfast buffet was much better and was quite extensive. On weekdays breakfast lasts until 10:00, and at 10:00 the staff clear it away promptly - a little too promptly for my liking, and this needs addressing as it is not comfortable being rushed to grab food before it disappears. Reception staff and cleaners were very friendly and helpful. The building is centered around an internal central atrium. Rooms which are not superior face on to this, so in my opinion it is worth paying extra to upgrade to a superior room. Riga Central Station, Latvia - 20th January, 2015

It is known as the main point of Riga due to its location near Central Station, and most forms of public transport stop in this area. Central Station is bigger than just the square in front of the station; it includes shops, public transport stops and various buildings. The footage is taken from the platform, and from Neo Bar in the station clock tower. Majori, Jūrmalas Pilsēta, Latvia - 20th January, 2015

Flaming Sambuca at the Kiwi Bar, Riga, Latvia - 19th January, 2015

Please forgive this slight detraction from the usual type of film that I upload, but I found this to be quite novel, and I wanted to share it with others. On a recent visit to Riga in my favourite bar, the Kiwi Bar, Sambuca is served in an innovative way. I've had a flaming Sambuca before but not in this way. The drink is prepared as follows: 1. Sambuca is poured into a brandy type glass. 2. Three coffee beans are added to the Sambuca (these stand for faith, hope and charity). 3. The brandy glass is balanced on its side on a tumbler. 4. The Sambuca is ignited with a cigarette lighter or match, and the brandy glass is rotated so the flame coats the whole of the inside of the rotating glass. 5. After 20 seconds, the brandy glass is lifted and the Sambuca is poured into a tumbler, the brandy glass is there placed into the tumbler to create a vacuum, and extinguish the flame. 6. The brandy glass is placed upside down on the bar, and a straw underneath it, which is then inhaled to get a 'hit' of the Sambuca fumes. 7. The Sambuca is then 'shotted'!
