Review: Avalon Hotel, Riga, Latvia - January, 2015
http://ift.tt/1BpZr4v I recently stayed at the Avalon Hotel, whilst on a short break to Riga. The hotel is within a 5 minute walk of Riga Central Station, and is only a street away from Riga Old Town. A taxi to the hotel from the airport cost 15 Euro. I paid 208 Euro with booking.com for a superior room with queen size bed, which looked over the railway line at the front of the hotel. The room was warm, quiet and very inviting. The bed was soft and comfortable. The bathroom was modern and shiny with a shower over the bath, and complimentary shower gel and shampoo provided daily. With my superior room I also received a voucher for a complimentary two course evening meal in the hotel restaurant. This was a good bonus, although I only ate there once, and wasn't particularly enamoured with the food. The breakfast buffet was much better and was quite extensive. On weekdays breakfast lasts until 10:00, and at 10:00 the staff clear it away promptly - a little too promptly for my liking, and this needs addressing as it is not comfortable being rushed to grab food before it disappears. Reception staff and cleaners were very friendly and helpful. The building is centered around an internal central atrium. Rooms which are not superior face on to this, so in my opinion it is worth paying extra to upgrade to a superior room. Overall I liked this hotel, and would certainly recommend it to others visiting Riga. To visit the Avalon Hotel website, click here: http://ift.tt/1zaFkK3 . Flaming Sambuca at the Kiwi Bar, Riga, Latvia - 19th January, 2015
http://ift.tt/1AYBTB3 Sambuca is an Italian anise-flavoured, usually colourless, liqueur, to read more about it, click here: http://ift.tt/1BkrxhH . Please forgive this slight detraction from the usual type of film that I upload, but I found this to be quite novel, and I wanted to share it with others. On a recent visit to Riga in my favourite bar, the Kiwi Bar, Sambuca is served in an innovative way. I've had a flaming Sambuca before but not in this way. The drink is prepared as follows: 1. Sambuca is poured into a brandy type glass. 2. Three coffee beans are added to the Sambuca (these stand for faith, hope and charity). 3. The brandy glass is balanced on its side on a tumbler. 4. The Sambuca is ignited with a cigarette lighter or match, and the brandy glass is rotated so the flame coats the whole of the inside of the rotating glass. 5. After 20 seconds, the brandy glass is lifted and the Sambuca is poured into a tumbler, the brandy glass is there placed into the tumbler to create a vacuum, and extinguish the flame. 6. The brandy glass is placed upside down on the bar, and a straw underneath it, which is then inhaled to get a 'hit' of the Sambuca fumes. 7. The Sambuca is then 'shotted'! I found this an entertaining and novel way to serve the drink. To visit the Kiwi Bar website, click here: http://www.kiwibar.lv . To see a film of Riga, click here: http://ift.tt/1BkrxhI . Versailles Château Rive Gauche to Champs de Mar, RER Line C, Paris, France - 18th October, 2014
http://ift.tt/1xY3KEa The RER is a regional rapid transit system in France serving Paris and its suburbs. The RER is an integration of a modern city-centre underground rail and a pre-existing set of commuter rail lines. It has several connections with the Paris Métro within the city of Paris. Within the city, the RER functions like the Métro, but is faster as it has fewer stops. Since 1999 the network has consisted of five lines: A, B, C, D and E. To read more about the RER click here: http://ift.tt/WwFDak . This film features views from Paris's RER Line C from Versailles Château Rive Gauche, passing through Porchefontaine, Viroflay Rive-Gauche, Chaville Vélizy, Meudon Val-Fleury, Issy, Issy - Val de Seine, Pont du Garigliano, Javel and finally calling at Champs de Mars - Tour Eiffel. Novotel Genéve Centre, Geneva, Switzerland - January 2015
http://ift.tt/1KCbPUn I recently had the pleasure of spending 4 days (3 nights) in the Swiss city of Geneva, and stayed at the Novotel Genéve Centre which is located within the city between the Pâquis-Temple and Mont-Blanc districts. The hotel is a 7 minute walk from Geneva's central station (Gare de Cornavin), and is also a 7 minute walk from the shore of the North Eastern tip of Lake Geneva, where it pours out to become the River Rhône. Whilst making my way to the hotel, I had noticed in the street called Rue de Berne, (which is left around the corner from the main entrance of the hotel) that there were a few 'unsavoury' looking characters hanging around in groups on street corners, as well as a couple of ladies whom I assumed were prostitutes. My suspicions were confirmed when I later found out that this was also Geneva's 'red light district'. I'm mentioning this now, so as to paint an accurate account of my experience. I would like to stress absolutely that at no point was I or my wife approached or bothered by any of these people, but others may find this off-putting. This is of course no fault of Novotel's who employed security guards to keep those they didn't want in the hotel out of it. There was also a sign near the main entrance warning people to keep an eye on their belongings. To access the upper floors where the bedrooms are located, it is necessary to use the elevators, which required your key card to operate - another useful security barrier employed by the hotel. I paid 472 CHF (Swiss Francs), which equates to £307 GBP / 393 Euro / $466 US. This was via Booking.com and was vastly cheaper than the cheapest room rate quoted on the hotel website: http://ift.tt/1BbtG0o which states rooms are from 180 CHF per night. For our 472 CHF we had a 2+2 room (king sized bed with double sofa bed), with breakfast for two people included, along with a local public transport travel card which covered buses, trolleybuses, trams, yellow lake boats and trains between Geneva and the airport. This saved us 10.60 CHF per person per day, so over the four days this saved us 84.80 CHF (£55.29 GBP / 70.61 Euro / $83.68 US). Geneva is quite an expensive city in terms of every day tourist expenditure, including food and drink, so any saving made is a welcome one. The room itself was a very good size, warm and comfortable. I have no real gripes about it, other than the separate toilet room not having its own sink, which I think it should have for hygiene purposes. The bathroom had both a bath and a separate shower, and the bedroom came with free tea and coffee making facilities (however no milk ever, which we found strange), it also had a free to use safe. Storage was ample, although there were only six coat hangers in the wardrobe. The bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was OK, I've had better, and I've had worse. The bacon was a little over done and fatty for my liking, and I found the turkey sausages a bit weird. The ratatouille was so bitter it was inedible to me personally, and the scrambled eggs whilst tasty were stone cold one day. With that said, the bread, salads, yoghurts, pastries and cereals were great. All of the staff were friendly and helpful and I have no complaints about them whatsoever. The building was very modern, and the lobby high-tech with computers and a touch screen TV. I did enjoy my stay here, and for the price that I paid, would certainly stay there again in future. This film features views of the hotel exterior, reception, lobby, elevator, corridor, bedroom, bathroom, restaurant and breakfast buffet. Hotel Review: Park Inn by Radisson, Berlin Alexanderplatz, Germany - 4th December, 2014
http://ift.tt/1BQNrIC I stayed at the Park Inn by Radisson for one night in December 2014. I had flown into Berlin that afternoon, and was due to catch an early train the next morning from Berlin to Magdeburg, from Alexanderplatz station, so this hotel was conveniently located. It was also good for checking out the extensive Christmas markets taking place in the streets below. My impressions of the hotel were that it was very big, the downside to this was the sheer number of guests in the building, it was very busy, particularly on the ground floor. The queue for checking in was long and took 20 minutes to get through, this was a major weakness of this hotel that needs addressing. Checking in took too long, and it needn't do, I would suggest that the hotel invests in some automated check-in machines to speed up the check-in process. The bedroom I had was very good, it was compact but neat, and very comfortable with excellent views towards the television tower. I had room only as the breakfast was far too expensive. Above the hotel is a panorama terrace that offers good views towards the TV tower and over Berlin. This film features views from the terrace as well as of my room. Despite the long check-in and expensive breakfast I did like this hotel, and should I need to stay at Alexanderplatz in future, would stay there again if the price was right. http://ift.tt/1BnuajI The Panorama Tower is officially called the City-Hochhaus. It is a 36-storey skyscraper in Leipzig, Germany. At 142 m (466 ft), it is the tallest multistorey building in Leipzig. The tower was designed by architect Hermann Henselmann in the shape of an open book, and built between 1968 and 1972. Leipzig Trams, Leipzig, Saxony, Germany - 9th December, 2014
http://ift.tt/1ByaQON The Leipzig tram network has 13 lines, and a route length of 148.3 km (92.1 mi), with 510 tram stops, making it the second biggest tram network in Germany, after the Berlin tramway network. This video features footage of trams near Leipzig Hauptbahnhof (the main railway station), as well as at other locations in the City. The footage demonstrates the different types of trams, including old Soviet era trams and very modern 'Flexity Classics', which are a model of light-rail tram manufactured by Bombardier. Although it is marketed as the most traditionally-designed member of the Flexity family, it is nevertheless a modern bi-directional articulated tram with a low-floor section allowing improved accessibility, especially to passengers in wheelchairs. Hotel Review: Best Western, Leipzig Centre, Saxony, Germany - 9th December, 2014
http://ift.tt/1ByaQi3 I stayed for one night at the Best Western Hotel in Leipzig in December 2014. I needed a hotel that would be close to the railway station, and this one fitted the bill perfectly. My room was on the 7th floor, but only the first 6 floors were lift accessible, so the remaining floor I had to access via stairs, which was slightly problematic as I was dragging a 25kg suitcase. My room was small but very cosy, the bed was extremely comfortable and I very much enjoyed my stay there. The breakfast was very good and the staff were friendly and helpful. If you need to stay in central Leipzig near to the main train station, then I would recommend this hotel to you. To read reviews of this hotel on TripAdvisor, click here: http://ift.tt/1BnuaQT . Review: InterCity Hotel Magdeburg Hauptbahnhof, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany - 5th December, 2014
http://ift.tt/1ygzAgD I stayed at the InterCity hotel on a recent visit to Magdeburg. I needed to be close to the railway station, and this was a perfect hotel for me to stay in. The room was fairly basic, but it was warm and comfortable, and had a view across the railway lines behind the hotel. Breakfast was the usual InterCity buffet, and was very good, although the breakfast room was extremely busy, which wasn't particularly comfortable, and I was unable to film the buffet due to the number of people having breakfast. The film features exterior views of the hotel, both from the railway station, and in front of the hotel, as well as views of the entrance, bar, restaurant and a detailed room inspection. I would definitely recommend this hotel to other visitors to Magdeburg, particularly to those who need to be near the station. Horsforth Railway Station 2014 Compilation, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England
http://ift.tt/1ygzyWh Horsforth railway station is a railway station in West Yorkshire, England. It is on the Harrogate Line 5.75 miles (9 km) north west of Leeds station and the final stop in the Metro regulated area towards Harrogate. The station is located on the Cookridge side of the Moseley beck but has a Horsforth postcode (LS18). To read more about Horsforth Station, click here: http://ift.tt/1ygzxBJ . When I travel by train from home, I usually begin my journeys at Horsforth Railway Station. I always have something with me which I can record some video footage with, be it my iPhone 5, Flip Ultra, Veho Muvi or Canon Legria HFS 200 Camcorder, so in the minutes that I'm waiting, I quite often make a few seconds worth of film of either the surroundings or of the passing rail traffic. I have done this for the past few years now, and at the beginning of a new year have released my compilation from the previous year. Here is my compilation of footage from Horsforth Railway Station in 2014. The clips have been put in the order that they were shot chronologically, starting in January and finishing in December. Some shots are by day, and others at night, but all of them capture the moments that I was there waiting. 2014 has been a year of continued development at Horsforth Station, with a new passenger waiting area on the Northbound platform and the completion of a turn-back facility also on the Northbound side, allowing trains from Leeds to terminate at Horsforth then turn back to Leeds, thus increasing capacity from the station into Leeds. The turn-back has only recently been used to help with extra demand at Christmas, but is not featured in use in the film. Featured class units and locomotive along with information about them is as follows: Class 43 - http://ift.tt/1uTkoUA ; Class 142 - http://ift.tt/1wL4Ttk ; Class 144 - http://ift.tt/1wL4Ttl ; Class 150 - http://ift.tt/1lsQUoK ; Class 153 - http://ift.tt/1wL4RSd ; Class 155 - http://ift.tt/1wL4Ttw ; and Class 158 - http://ift.tt/1wL4TJM . Featured train operating companies are Northern Rail and East Coast Trains. To read more about them click here: Northern Rail - http://ift.tt/1uTkoUx ; and East Coast - http://ift.tt/1uTkmvK .
